A total of 28 patients (28 men and 12 women) were included in the study. The men and women were similar in age, body mass index, and the baseline sex and clinical erectile function. Patients were randomized to either Viagra or placebo for 4 weeks. Patients were then compared between the treatment groups with the mean age of 65 years old at baseline and a mean duration of treatment of 2.7 years (SD=1.6, range 1–4.2 years). In addition, the mean duration of treatment of men and women was 3.3 years (SD=1.9, range 1–5.2 years). There was a significant positive correlation between the baseline sexual desire and the duration of treatment, but there was no significant correlation between the baseline sexual desire and the response to treatment, or the duration of treatment. Patients in the men and women in the treatment group were more likely to report a positive response to treatment than were patients in the placebo group, but the correlation was not significant.

Erectile dysfunction is a common problem that affects millions of men worldwide, affecting a significant percentage of people of all ages. This condition occurs due to physiological and psychological factors, including physical and psychological stressors, that can result in the inability to achieve and maintain an erection. The most common treatment for erectile dysfunction is the use of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5Is).
